The Project for Strengthening REDD + and South-South cooperation is crucial for the implementation of a system for measuring the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
Why Mexico, through the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), met with Norwegian authorities in this field.
In this regard, the representative of the Government of Norway, Henrik Fliflet expressed his desire to continue working with the CONAFOR in environmental monitoring.
This at the opening of the 5th Meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for this project was conducted in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, assisted by representatives of FAO and UNDP Mexico.
This initiative dating from the signing of the MOU between Norway and Mexico in May 2010 aims to develop a System of Measurement, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) for REDD + Mechanism in Mexico.
And promote Mexico as a center of excellence for the exchange of experiences and skills in MRV with Latin America and Central America to what has been called South-South Cooperation.
To achieve these goals the institution works in coordination with CONABIO, INECC, INEGI, UNAM, the Scientific Research Centre of Yucatan, Colegio de la Frontera Sur and organization U Yool Che AC
Meanwhile FAO is involved with technical advice and UNDP administers financial resources and project.
The director general of the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), Rescala Jorge Perez said during this act «are convinced of the excellent results that have been achieved and currently has a system of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) practically finished and working with the Government of the Republic attend punctually and sufficiency this commitment as part of the strategy to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. »
In this sense -aseguró Rescala Perez in the institution are taking the necessary steps to integrate the structure and organization, functions and actions on MRV, «so that this issue is everyday and cross all the work making the institution. »
The director of CONAFOR also expressed the importance of the process is recognized and reported that recently has been the consideration of UNDP project extension. «Surely, shortly analyze the feasibility and if the terms of this coordination,» he said.
Dr. Thelma Krug, the National Institute of Space Research of Brazil, said that Mexico is doing much to have a robust and reliable system and this is a prerequisite as it were for Mexico futuramente payment may have reduced deforestation for example. Meanwhile Tore Langhelle, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, said the Strengthening Project has progressed greatly in recent years «and now that Mexico has a very advanced system of MRV it’s time for the implementation of national efforts it is a challenge that we believe Mexico has the resources for this effort and we are very interested in being part of that process, «he said.
During the opening ceremony of the work also involved, Mary Joseph Michel, FAO Representative in Mexico and Edgar Gonzalez official UNDP program.
Work will continue in this same venue -this 06 February- with the presentation of the progress in implementing the strategy of cooperation and initiative to reduce emissions.
