Washington.-El presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, cuestionó hoy la lógica y señaló la incoherencia de los republicanos que esgrimen en el Congreso el proyecto de financiamiento del Departamento de Seguridad Interna (DHS) para presionarlo en materia migratoria.
Durante un encuentro en la Casa Blanca con jóvenes beneficiados con el programa de suspensión de deportaciones a menores, implementado desde 2012, el mandatario sostuvo que la estrategia republicana no tiene lógica y llamó a los legisladores del partido rojo a tener en cuenta el costo humano de acabar con su política de alivio para millones de inmigrantes.
Los republicanos -quienes dominan ambas cámaras en el Capitolio- buscan impulsar un proyecto que financie el DHS hasta el fin del presente año fiscal (30 de septiembre), pero han incluido enmiendas que eliminan los fondos para las acciones ejecutivas de Obama en temas migratorios.
Además de la medida que favorece a menores de edad, el gobernante anunció en noviembre último disposiciones que darían estatus legal a más de 4,5 millones de indocumentados, quienes podrían permanecer en el país y obtener permiso de empleo.
La víspera, la minoría demócrata en el Senado logró frenar, por 51 votos a favor y 48 en contra, un proyecto de ley -ya aprobado por la Cámara de Representantes- que torpedeaba las acciones unilaterales de Obama para el cual este había prometido su veto.
El dignatario fue claro este miércoles: «Vetaré cualquier legislación que llegue a mi escritorio y que arrebate a estos jóvenes, que crecieron aquí y que están preparados para contribuir a este país, la oportunidad de hacerlo, y estoy confiado de que podré mantener ese veto», dijo.
De acuerdo con el inquilino de la Casa Blanca, esos jóvenes «son estadunidenses como nosotros y ellos pertenecen aquí, y vamos a hacer lo correcto».
Por otra parte, Obama opinó que los republicanos interesados en fortalecer la seguridad fronteriza no podrían dejar ahora sin fondos el DHS -cuyo presupuesto vence a finales de este mes- sin poner en riesgo las operaciones que se ocupan de ello, «particularmente -apuntó- en un momento cuando tenemos preocupaciones reales acerca de la lucha contra el terrorismo».
«Muy a menudo en este debate sobre la inmigración…, es una abstracción y realmente no se piensa en las consecuencias humanas de nuestras posiciones», sostuvo Obama.
